CARE is seeking a dynamic and driven individual to assume the role of Country Director for Sudan. The Country Director will lead CARE's strategy and operations and ensure impactful programming that enhances the lives of poor and vulnerable women and girls and addresses injustice and discrimination.

It is a time of great change; we are at a moment of historic significance for Sudan. The Country Director will be responsible for working with the CARE team, our key partners, allies and the communities whom we serve, to inspire appropriate action and build a new vision for CARE’s role in the next stage of Sudan’s development journey. The CD will also be responsible for guiding the CARE program through the many risks and hazards ahead, offering responsible stewardship for our current important work.

CARE has been part of Sudan’s development journey for almost four decades, with a growing program, including work in East and West Darfur and South Kordofan that reaches over half a million people through work on economic empowerment, health, nutrition, and water. All our programs, supported by a team of more than 100 staff, focus on women and girls’ empowerment as a primary route to change.

As the country leader, the CD will continuously enhance ways of working to support the Country Office to meet and exceed goals, innovate, deliver impactful programming and work in effective teams, coalitions and networks. S/he will be a great representative, role model and motivator for the Country Office and will be an advocate for the team, especially during times of change.

The Country Director will oversee the development, funding and implementation of the Country Office portfolio and will be responsible for adequate emergency preparedness and effective humanitarian response. S/he will be an accomplished representative to external partners.

Country Directors are a critical part of the CARE’s global work, and as part of that will contribute to CARE International’s global program strategy by contributing ideas, sharing knowledge and evidence from your country programming. The person we select for this role will also lead the Country Office fundraising strategy and ensure the program's financial viability.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain a strong, innovative senior leadership team
  • Lead the design, implementation, and evolution of the Country Office strategic plan
  • Oversee Country Office programming to advance CARE's vision and mission, in line with CARE's Program Strategy and standards for program quality
  • Direct the mobilization, management, and accounting of all resources in the Country Office
  • Oversee the management and development of the Country Office human resources to ensure a diverse, skilled, and productive workforce
  • Establish and sustain productive relationships with government officials, donors and strategic partners
  • Ensure full compliance with CARE’s and donors’ rules and regulations
  • Develop and enhance relationships, partnerships and networks between the Country Office, other parts of CARE and external organizations to maximize CARE's impact on poverty and social justice
  • Ensure CARE’s stance on Protection, Sexual, Harassment Exploitation and Abuse [PSHEA] is monitored and adhered to by both staff and our Partners and individuals/organizations held accountable for violation

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • 6-8 years in senior management position in development field
  • Demonstrated experience in leading strategic and operational planning
  • Extensive conceptual skills including strategic analysis
  • Demonstrated management skills in a complex international setting
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Strong human resource management skills including capacity building, coaching and conflict management
  • Experience supervising and developing a multi-disciplinary team in a cross-cultural setting;
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to give feedback, develop, motivate and lead a diverse team to achieve results
  • Demonstrated use of positive coping strategies in stressful environments
  • Knowledge and experience with financial management as demonstrated by ability to:
    • Manage a complex budget
    • Effectively follow-up on internal and external audit recommendations
    • Ensure donor compliance and reporting
  • Must possess the ability to establish a learning and innovation culture within the Country Office and to facilitate knowledge sharing across CARE
  • Experience in successfully managing various forms of partnerships with national and international NGOs, etc.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with donors and government counterparts
  • Strong representation, influencing and negotiation skills
