Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Protection Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Associate Protection Officer will:

  • Through relationships with persons of concern and network of partners stay abreast of political, social, economic and cultural developments that have an impact on the protection environment and provide advice to senior management.
  • Ensure that the perspectives, capacities, needs and resources of the persons of concerns are reflected in the protection strategy, during planning processes and the implementation. Endure to address the specific protection needs of PSNs.
  • Stay abreast of the domestic legal issues and pertinent laws regarding persons of concern and advise the Office accordingly.
  • Consistently apply international and national law and UNHCR policies and standards.
  • Liaise with legal partner and intervene with local authorities on the legal issues pertaining to persons of concern.
  • Assist in the coordinated implementation and oversight of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all protection/solutions activities.
  • Support a consultative process with government counterparts at local levels, partners and persons of concern to develop and implement integrated strategies that address the key protection priorities, including, for example, child protection, education and SGBV, and solutions approaches.
  • Conduct the AGDM that inform the planning process and follow up the implementation and monitoring of programmes ensuring that identified protection needs, including an Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) approach, are adequately addressed.
  • Maintain protection presence through regular field missions and reports, making direct contact with persons of concern, host communities, local authorities and partners.
  • Ensure through direct action and advocacy with more senior protection staff that the necessary resources are allocated to enable protection activities to identify and address protection and assistance gaps.
  • Work closely with the UNAMID SLF Staff and protection officers to suggest, produce and disseminate analysis on issues which have an impact on the persons of concern’s, IDPs and returnees’ protection situation.
  • Work with the protection partners in the IDP and return areas to help strengthen their capacity to provide quality analytical reports.
  • Assist in the promotion of international refugee law principles and standards and also IDP legislation or policies ensuring that all sectors and clusters fulfill their responsibilities mainstreaming protection.
  • Collect data from various sources to constantly monitor protection trends and risks in the area of responsibility.
  • Assist participation of protection actors in the Refugee Working Group, Protection Working Group, and RRR Sector involved in monitoring and analysis.
  • Contribute to meet protection reporting requirements of the Field Office.
  • Contribute to the office’s risk analysis and management through continuous monitoring of sources.
  • Monitor the substantive content of protection monitoring tools with all stakeholders and make recommendations on adjustments.
  • Monitor the implementation of agreed protection monitoring strategy, adjust where needed.
  • Support the broader work of the Protection Unit as required.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

University degree in Law, Iinternational Law, International Relations, Social Sciences, Political Sciences or related field.

Required experience: 36 Months

Experience remark:

3 years of relevant professional experience, including in the areas of community services, social work, and human rights.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Area of expertise: Protection of refugees, asylum seekers and IDPs

Area of expertise details:

  • Field operational experience on refugee, returnees and IDP.
  • Proven communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community communication and engagement approaches.
  • Understanding of and demonstrated competencies in forced displacement and protection particularly SGBV prevention and response, child protection, education, gender equality and the application of the Age, Gender and Diversity Policy.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;

Driving license: No
