Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

The overall purpose is threefold: firstly, to support the monitoring, reporting and coordination of the interagency peacebuilding project (PBF) in Central and South Darfur; secondly, to support UNICEF’s work across the five Darfur States in monitoring, reporting, knowledge management and peacebuilding technical support (in terms of the application of peacebuilding in social services and engagement with women and young people); and, thirdly, to help facilitate effective coordination and information flow with the PBF Secretariat team. The primary reporting line is to the PBF lead agency (i.e. UNICEF/UNDP/UNHCR) in the field, where the IUNV is based with a secondary reporting line to the Head of the PBF Secretariat.

Under the direct supervision of the UNICEF/UNDP/UNHCR Chief/Coordinator of Field Office or the delegated Project Manager, and in coordination with the PBF Secretariat team, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Coordinate and facilitate the timely development and compilation of periodic reports from UN agencies and other partners in South and Central Darfur/North and East/West Darfur
  • Support the coordination of the PBF stakeholders, including SLF, at State and Locality level in South and Central Darfur/North and East/West Darfur
  • Ensure predictable and regular coordination and communication with the PBF Secretariat team in Sudan
  • Support the development and implementation of a process to document and share good practice for UNICEF/UNDP/UNHCR across the Darfur States
  • Support the overall monitoring of the PBF (in accordance with the Result Framework and agreed monitoring indicators) across South and Central Darfur/North and East/West Darfur
  • Support UNICEF/UNDP/UNHCR monitoring and reporting processes in all five Darfur States
  • Support integration of gender perspectives into all PBF projects implementation
  • Support UNICEF/UNDP/UNHCR peacebuilding practice in social service delivery and women and youth engagement as required

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Type of Degree: Political Science, Human Rights, Peacebuilding, Social Development or a similar field.

Required experience: 60 Months

Experience remark:

  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience in peacebuilding, humanitarian and development programming and implementation at the field level
  • Previous experience in peacebuilding, mainstreaming conflict sensitivity and emergency preparedness and response. Experience in Darfur is an added advantage

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Optional), Level - Fluent

Area of expertise: Resource mobilization, partnership and donor coordination, Gender equality and the advancement of women, Other communications-related experience

Area of expertise details:

  • Knowledge and demonstrable skills in monitoring, reporting and coordination
  • Knowledge of peacebuilding theory and practice; and of the latest developments and principles of humanitarian action and international humanitarian law
  • Knowledge and demonstrable experience in gender equality, women’s rights and women’s empowerment programming.
  • Strong negotiating, communication and advocacy skills
  • Ability to work and live in difficult environment
  • Integrity and professionalism: demonstrated expertise in area of specialty and ability to apply good judgment; high degree of autonomy, personal initiative and ability to take ownership; willingness to accept wide responsibilities and ability to work independently under established procedures in a politically sensitive environment, while exercising discretion, impartiality and neutrality; ability to manage information objectively, accurately and confidentially; responsive and client-oriented.
