Area Managers - Sudan

NRC established operations in Sudan in 2020, a country hosting over three million refugees and displaced people. Outside of Khartoum, NRC will soon start operations in White Nile, South Kordofan, and the greater Darfur region. In 2021, we will focus on establishing robust area-based operations, and are looking for experienced practitioners with proven humanitarian leadership and field management capacities, to develop our teams, processes, and relationships. Area Managers in NRC are expected to have Country Director-level potential and qualities, and have significant roles and responsibilities, including for overall implementation of our projects.

We are now undertaking a batch recruitment, as there are multiple Area Manager positions starting at different dates throughout 2021. Both Sudanese and international candidates are welcome to apply. In addition to the normal roles and responsibilities expected of Area Managers, we are looking for people that are committed to proactive engagement with the people we are in Sudan to serve (regardless of project cycles), manage effective relationships with local authorities and other stakeholders, and are able to work with new ways of working, such as through market-based or tech-enabled approaches.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Establish area-based operations and teams in line with NRC structure, through both Area Offices and sub-Area Offices (Field Offices)
  • Ensure strategic and proactive relationship management with people we serve and also with local authorities
  • Facilitate integrated programme analysis, information-sharing, and timely inputs for strategic advocacy and communications
  • Ensure high quality and accountable project implementation and broader project cycle management (PCM) processes
  • Line management for senior project staff and support functions in the Area
  • Provide area specific input on Core Competence strategies, Country Strategy and Plan of Action
  • Organize grants opening and closure meetings at area level
  • Implementation of projects (including master support budget and coordinating input for donor proposals and reports) in the area, in compliance with contractual commitments and aligned to regional and global strategies
  • Assess needs, develop emergency response and implement response plans, including cash-based interventions and market-based programmes
  • Represent NRC and networking on area level
  • Ensure that capacity building is provided to all staff in the area

Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of experience from working as a Senior Project Manager in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Minimum First Level University/Bachelor's Degree in relevant field.
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal
  • Knowledge of local languages in Sudan (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of the context in Sudan (advantageous)
  • Experience with start-up assignments for area-based operations

We can offer

  • Duty Station TBC: Multiple positions with the potential of being posted in White Nile, South Kordofan or Darfur
  • Travel: approximately 30%
  • Grade: Grade 10 in NRC's structure
  • Contract Period: 2 years
