About the job

In Sudan, protection is a key program pillar of DRC’s work, supporting vulnerable IDP, refugee, and host community populations. DRC has protection programming across 4 different states comprising of activities such as protection monitoring, case management, direct assistance to persons with specific needs, referral mapping etc. The protection coordinator will be responsible for supporting DRC’s protection program country-wide, ensuring that there are standardized program approaches, and that protection programming is implemented at a high technical standard. The coordinator will also actively engage in external coordination on behalf of DRC, supporting advocacy initiatives and ensuring that proposed projects are developed in line with cluster standards.

The Protection Coordinator's main sector responsibilities include advocacy for the rights of displaced people in their context of displacement, child protection initiatives, individual protection assistance based on vulnerability, legal aid, land & property rights, sexual and gender-based violence prevention, registration services for the internally displaced and refugees, monitoring of rights and rights awareness-raising, protection mainstreaming.

More specifically, the main responsibilities include:

Coordination and representation

  • Collaborate with relevant internal and external technical experts on issues related to protection
  • Represent DRC at relevant (cluster/sector) coordination meetings.
  • Ensure good representation and reputation of protection sector at all levels
  • Prepare regular protection analyses and advocacy documents

General Programming & Operations

  • Develop protection country strategy
  • Develop SOPs and ensure that DRC’s protection response is standardized across the Sudan country program
  • Ensure the monitoring and technical supervision of quality protection interventions
  • Produce protection needs assessments, analyses, periodic reports and other quality documents related to protection
  • Ensure strategic integration of protection activities with other DRC sector responses (e.g. FSL, emergency, cash etc.).
  • Support the SMT in ensuring protection mainstreaming in all aspects of the mission (programs and support)
  • Evaluate needs and opportunities for protection programming
  • Work closely with all relevant departments to ensure implementation of DRC's Code of Conduct and Protection against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) policy (including capacity building / training)
  • Facilitate regular meetings/trainings on protection for all DRC staff in Sudan and ensure strong technical capacity of DRC protection program staff
  • Participate in preparing and ensuring quality of monthly/quarterly/annual internal and external reports
  • Lead by example on DRC’s commitments in safeguarding and protection against sexual exploitation and abuse.

Project development

  • Lead on the development of proposals for protection activities in coordination with the Head of Programmes
  • Ensure the quality of the protection programs by providing technical guidance to Project Managers/Team Leaders, developing tools needed for quality implementation, and assure the training of the teams on technical aspects
  • Ensure compliance with global/national/regional protection cluster standards, DRC protection guidance, and global best practices
  • Assist in developing project plans and budgets for funding
  • Assist in developing Monitoring & Evaluation tools and the capturing of learning

About you

We expect you to have:

  • Minimum 5 years of practical experience in protection working for an INGO
  • Documented skills in project planning and design, including proposal development
  • Excellent skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience in project development
  • Experience working with INGOs, national partners, local/government authorities, and UN organisations
  • Full professional proficiency in English, Arabic an asset
  • Proven technical expertise in the following areas: emergency protection, community-based protection, counselling, durable solutions, case management and psychosocial support.
  • Master's degree in political science, international development, economics or other relevant field
