Position Title: Project Support Officer (DTM)

Duty Station: Khartoum, Sudan

Classification: Professional Staff, Grade UG

Type of Appointment: Special short-term ungraded, 6 months with possibility of extension

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Internal and external candidates will be considered for this vacancy. For the purposes of this vacancy, internal candidates are defined as staff members holding a regular, fixed-term or short-term graded or ungraded contract, including Junior Professional Officers (JPOs), staff on Special Leave Without Pay (SLWOP), and staff members on secondment/loan released by the Organization, unless otherwise specified in their contract. Staff members holding a regular, fixed-term or short-term graded contract will not retain their contract type if appointed to an ungraded position.

Context:

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Programmes (HoP); and direct supervision of the Programme Officer (DTM), the Project Support Officer will be responsible for supporting project implementation and operations, coordinating emergency data collection, conceptualizing additional DTM assessments and supporting operational expansion.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Support the development of relevant DTM tools such as multi-sectoral, inter-sectoral, and thematic assessments, alerts, state profiles, etc.

  2. Support methodological conceptualization for operational expansion of DTM activities in coordination with the Programme Officer.

  3. Support the operational expansion of DTM’s activities through context monitoring and application of relevant methodological components to the new areas of operation.

  4. Conduct analysis of quantitative data and findings of DTM data collection rounds and determine relevant information for inclusion in monthly and quarterly reports in coordination with the DTM Reporting Officer.

  5. Conceptualize relevant infographics, graphs, maps and tables based on data collection assessments to be included in DTM reports and updates in coordination with the DTM Reporting Officer.

  6. Support in the coordination of high-level projects and data collection exercises through all phases including engagement with relevant partners, developing assessment tools and providing trainings.

  7. Track and answer information / data requests from IOM (IOM HQ and other missions) and external staff (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), sector etc.) in coordination with the Programme Officer.

  8. Support the Programme Officer in liaising with humanitarian sectors and partners including Regional Office (RO) and HQ in order to plan and conduct desk-reviews, flash, thematic, or inter-sectoral assessments.

  9. Coordinate with the field on emergency and standard data collection operations, trainings and general activities.

  10. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

• Master’s degree in, Migration Studies, Anthropology, Humanitarian Affairs, Development Studies, Political Science, International relations, social sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or

• University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

• Experience in project development, scientific or academic writing, routine reporting; and,

• Experience in the displacement and migration field.

Skills

• Excellent research, writing, communication and analytical skills; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; personal commitment, efficiency, flexibility;

• Ability to read quantitative findings from different data collection exercises, and translate it into meaningful information and narrative;

• Knowledge of migration-related issues particularly with regard to the Middle East North Africa and Sub Saharan Africa; and,

• Ability to present research findings to different pools of stakeholders (donors, governments, academics, practitioners, etc).

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Arabic, French and/or Spanish is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
