LIGHT FOR THE WORLD strives for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases and for the elimination of avoidable blindness in Central and East African countries, through supporting holistic eye care. The organization is also focusing on improving the quality of life of people with a visual impairment, amongst others, by promoting inclusive education.

Short overview of our activities in the D.R. of the Congo

LIGHT FOR THE WORLD’s ambition consists in developing and guiding sustainable eye units in Congo, particularly in Katanga and in the East-Kasai province. LIGHT FOR THE WORLD is supporting the day-to-day operation of 3 eye clinics while a fourth unit became operational in 2016.

The expat ophthalmologist’s tasks in the D.R. of the Congo

The expat ophthalmologist will be based in Lubumbashi and be working mostly at the St-Yvonne eye hospital. He/she will however also regularly visit our other partner clinics in Likasi, Kolwezi and Mbuji Mayi.

His/her main task will consist in giving practical training to doctors and nurses in the field of diagnostic and surgical techniques. He/she will be holding consultations and carrying out surgeries together with his/her colleagues, aiming at improving the staff’s medical capacities. He/she will also focus on improving the quality procedures.

The expat ophthalmologist will moreover be in charge of the follow-up of individual co-workers and give advice as far as theoretical training or internship in other hospitals are concerned.

Required qualifications

· You are an ophthalmologist with good clinical and surgical skills

o Advanced knowledge of ophthalmological diagnostic methods.

o Advanced knowledge of ophthalmological treatment techniques, both non- invasive and surgical, with special attention for cataract surgeries using the SICS technique as well as phacoemulsification, surgical treatment of glaucoma and laser treatment of diabetic retinopathy.

· You have worked in Africa before

· You have a thorough knowledge of spoken and written French, English and/or Dutch are an asset

· You have good communication skills

· You are open to other cultures

· You are a team player

· You are willing to settle in Lubumbashi for at least 2 years.
