If you are a committed, creative professional and are passionate about making a lasting difference for children, the world's leading children's rights organization would like to hear from you. For 70years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments. Purpose of the Position Saleema is a package of communication tools and activities that aim to change the way people, including change agents themselves, talk about FGM/C. It is as much about introducing a range of positive approaches and evidence-based methods into the field of FGM/C communication practice as it is about shaping language. The initiative marks a number of key shifts: from focusing on the problem to a focus on the solution; from outside sources of expertise to family-level experience; from often politicized polemic to inclusiveness and dialogue. The mood is always confident, upbeat, positive, and inclusive.
The key objective of the initiative is to model and popularize use of the word 'saleema' itself as a positive terminology for describing uncut girls and women. Participants from the activist network chose the word Saleema to express a new field of positive associations for uncut girls and women. In Sudanese Arabic, Saleema means whole, healthy in body and mind, unharmed, intact, pristine, and untouched, in a God-given condition. Focusing on language is a critical foundational task in addressing social norms that perpetuate FGM/C
