United Arab Emirates: Consultant on Childhood Database, Bullying & Injury Prevention

Purpose of the Assignment

Provide technical assistance to the Programme Section, and assist in the implementation of program in the UAE including (but not limited to) the:

  • Childhood Database (65% of consultant's time)
  • Bullying Prevention Programme (15% of consultant's time)
  • Injury Prevention Project (20% of consultant's time
  • Assignment Tasks

  • Childhood database (in collaboration with a consultancy firm to be recruited at a later date)
  • Assist in facilitation of roundtable discussion/seminar with relevant stakeholders to seek inputs from UNICEF COs and RO to identify ways of developing database;
  • Assist technically in review an action plan to collect, document and audit indicators;
  • Assist different working groups from the different sectors to providing the relevant information and follow-up with them to obtain the data required;
  • Assist Consult and seek inputs from different stakeholders to discuss and approve the indictors;
  • Review and compile data provided by the working groups to be provided to the analyst;
  • Technically review the consolidated indicators;
  • Assist in facilitating and organizing trainings of relevant stakeholders on using the database
  • Bullying Prevention: (in collaboration with another consultant hired to design and analyze a related evaluation)
  • Review data collection reports of the use of the different methods of intervention from Phase I schools (pilot schools);
  • Code data collected from schools, clean the data and enter them into statistical software for analysis purposes;
  • Technically review the evaluation reports of findings (from phases I & II), and the applicability of the different methods of intervention in dealing with bullying cases in schools;
  • Prepare a draft manuscript for submission and publication in an international journal.
  • Injury Prevention Project:
  • Conduct a desk review of the major unintentional injuries in the UAE;
  • Assist focus group discussions with a number of parents to determine and understand the main forms of injuries and how best to reach them;
  • Technically review and develop content information and design of awareness material;
  • Design analysis to test the validity and practical use of the content prepared with a selected group of parents and finalize/revise according to feedback;
  • Review the final content, design and layout of the website.
  • Other programme-related activities requested by supervisor
  • Expected Deliverables

    Childhood database

  • Technical review of the consolidated list of indicators;
  • Technical review of the data collected;
  • Trainings delivered to relevant stakeholders;
  • Summary highlight the outcomes of consultations with different stakeholders;
  • Technical report on Action Plan agreed with partners;
  • Bullying Prevention Programme:

  • Training workshops delivered to schools ;
  • Data entry from schools questionnaires shared with analyst;
  • Technical review of the schools reports;
  • Technical review of the evaluation report;
  • One manuscript is prepared.
  • Injury Prevention Project

  • Report of the desk review of unintentional injuries in the UAE;
  • Content information is developed and submitted to designer;
  • Report on the focus group discussion with parents and content revised and finalized based on feedback
  • Review the visual design of content;
  • Report on piloting the content and design piloted with selected group of parents;
  • Content, design and layout of website is published.
  • Qualifications of Successful Candidate

    Education

  • Advanced university degree (PhD) preferably in child related field
  • Years of relevant experience

  • Over 7 years' experience working with the government sector as well as UN agencies in child related projects
  • Competencies of Successful Candidate

  • Strong analytical and presentation skills as demonstrated by past work experience;
  • Ability to research, analyze and present complex information as demonstrated by past work experience;
  • Very good knowledge of methodologies for qualitative and quantitative research;
  • Proven ability to write and present child-related issues (for both academic and non-academic audiences).
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills;
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong and effective working relationships;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and flexibly;
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity; knowledge of and experience in Gulf context preferred.
  • Work Permit

    Candidate must have a valid work permit in UAE.
