United Arab Emirates: Capacity Development of Social Workers

Purpose of the assignment:

To develop the capacities of social workers who work with children in conflict with law and children in care institutions in order to improve the protection of these children in all aspects.

Background

A child protection workshop was organized by UNICEF and Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood to map existing services between agencies and institutions involved in child protection and to explore ways to strengthen coordination and cooperation between these agencies to ensure optimal protection for children. One of the crucial recommendations of this workshop was to develop the capacities of the social workers who deal with vulnerable children in difficult circumstances and expose them to new ways and methods to improve child protection services.

Topics to be presented during the workshop:

The following topics will be presented by a multidisciplinary team of professionals/experts during the workshop to social workers working in Child Protection Institutions/Authorities.

  1. The role of child care Institutions;

  2. The role of the Social Worker: job description-experiences…etc.;

  3. Introducing case management of children in conflict with law and children in care institutions;

  4. The methods and skills of interviewing children (diagnosis and verification of cases);

  5. Developing an intervention plan for the children;

  6. How to work with children and families outside institutions;

  7. How to document, review and analyze information;

We propose that the workshop approach to be participatory (using the experiences of social workers, case studies, role play…etc.).

Key Tasks:

  • Prepare and design the training materials including topics, agenda, methods of working (2 weeks after signing contract)

  • Provide the training materials and handouts

  • Conduct training for the trainees and present the training program to include the above mentioned topics (approx. 25 trainees). (second half of January 2016)

  • Ensure effective and smooth running of the training sessions.

  • Prepare a pre and post assessment tool of the trainees

  • Provide a final report that documents the training. (2 weeks after training)

Deliverables:

  • Design of the training program to include: topics, agenda, methods of working

  • Education Materials and References (handouts) are handed over before the training

  • Training materials/ power point presentations used in the training workshop in Abu Dhabi.

  • Pre and post assessment tool of the trainees

  • A Final report to document the training

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate must have:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Social Sciences, or other relevant field;

  • Proven professional experience in children in conflict with law and children in care institutions;

  • Knowledge of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and international guidelines and standards related to juvenile justice and care institutions

  • An extensive experience in conducting training workshops

  • Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic languages

  • Very good communication and presentation skills

  • Previous experience in the Middle East or Gulf countries is a must
