Purpose of the Assignment
Assignment Tasks
Sharjah has developed various communications campaigns aimed at raising awareness of their rights by children. Activity books on the CRC have been disseminated. Notably, it conducts a campaign in schools to raise awareness on child sexual abuse and build children’s capacities to avoid and respond to situations of abuse. The campaign involves two recognizable characters, a boy and a girl, who are featured on various communications material, including leaflets, gadgets and videos, and actually visit schools to directly interact with children. The characters warn children about the risks of interacting with unknown persons as well as inappropriate behaviours by family relatives and friends and teach them to say “no”. They also inform children about the hotline they can call if they are victim of violence and abuse.
Child and youth centres also promote knowledge-based activities, although it is unclear to what extent they focus on children’s rights. Interactions with a range of actors working directly with children however suggests that understanding of some child rights concepts remains at times partial and could be reinforced. For example, the child’s right to participation is often understood as the right to participate in various activities. It is also adequately seen as giving the child the possibility to express views and for these views to be heard. Yet the scope for implementation of this key crosscutting principle is limited to choosing activities and/or indicating preferences. It often takes place through surveys, on a one-time basis, rather than as a continuous interactive process involving all aspects of children’s environment, in which children build their capacity to form an opinion and express it.
In order for the consultant to develop key messages and propose appropriate medium to carry these messages which might be different based on age group, gender…etc. therefore the consultant has to conduct focus group discussions with boy and girls from different age groups, nationality, socio-economic backgrounds. The consultant also has to conduct focus group discussions and interviews with parents, media authorities, and Sharjah Child Friendly Office.
