Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Gender Affairs Unit in the African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), in El Fasher. El Fasher is classified as a "E" non-family duty station. The Gender Affairs Officer reports to the Senior Gender Affairs Officer.
Mandate The African Union/UN Hybrid operation in Darfur, referred to by its acronym UNAMID, was established on 31 July 2007 with the adoption of Security Council resolution 1769. UNAMID has the protection of civilians as its core mandate, but is also tasked with contributing to security for humanitarian assistance, monitoring and verifying implementation of agreements, assisting an inclusive political process, contributing to the promotion of human rights and the rule of law, and monitoring and reporting on the situation along the borders with Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR). Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Gender Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Supports and guides the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security and the Policy on DPKO/DFS Gender Equality in Peacekeeping Operations in all work components of the mission activities that fosters women’s political participation, gender sensitive approaches, and promoting women’s role in national dialogue.
• Provides gender-sensitive technical assistance to all UNAMID sections.
• Drafts, edits and provides substantive inputs for periodic reports, briefings and speeches on gender equality related issues.
• Contributes to the design and implementation of a mission-wide action plan to translate existing mandates and policies on the promotion of gender equality in all activities of UNAMID.
• Contributes in developing and delivering induction and in-mission training with the Integrated Mission Training Centre (IMTC) on gender mainstreaming, gender equality, and conflict related sexual violence for all levels of peace keeping personnel (military, police and civilians) and other topics requested by Senior Management.
• Conducts substantive research and analysis of gender issues in utilizing analytical monitoring and evaluation processes, including indicators and benchmarks, to ensure measurement of progress in mainstreaming gender in the mission’s activities.
• Assist the Senior Gender Affairs Officer to coordinate and support the UN system on women’s empowerment, and play a catalytic role in strengthening women’s and civil society programmatic initiatives.
• Collaborates with UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes that have complementary mandates for the promotion of women’s and girls rights. coordinates with other UN agencies through participating in and leading, as appropriate, relevant country-level mechanisms for humanitarian coordination on gender-based violence such as the Protection Cluster and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) sub-cluster/working group, as well as with relevant national institutions and NGOs;
• Represents the mission at national and/or regional meetings, workshops and training programs on the development and promotion of gender and sexual violence issues.
• Establishes working relationships with mission’s divisions and sections.
• Inputs to planning processes, including results- based budgeting (RBB) and reporting.
• Provides day-to-day supervision of staff, when needed; carries out programmatic/substantive reviews of work and reports prepared by others.
•Provides support to the Women Focal Point in the mission.
•Performs other duties as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent dgree) in international relations, human rights law, gender studies, women’s studies, development studies, social sciences or in a related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in the promotion of gender equality and women’s rights is required. Experience in gender policy advice and programme management is required. Experience in delivering capacity building and training for women’s organizations on gender related issues is required. Experience working in a conflict or post-conflict setting is required. Experience in managing staff is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
